VIVE Focus 3/Elite XR goggles calibration

VR goggle basic calibration

The calibration procedure should be performed before using the application for the first time and before moving the simulator to a new location. Also in rare cases of updating Steam VR, setting up new headsets, etc.

Generally speaking, when the operator’s position in the machine is incorrect – this procedure will position the user avatar correctly.

If the goggles do not recognize the room, they will automatically switch to the simulation area definition mode.

If we move the simulator within the same room, we can force the area definition mode by covering all the goggle cameras when the goggles are being turned on.

The calibration process is shown in the video below:

Centering the participant to the default position

If, after performing the above basic calibration and then starting the application, the simulation participant is in an incorrect position – the person should be asked not to move the goggles for a while; should sit straight with the head facing forward.

You can now press the “Recenter” option at the bottom of the simulation screen.

The participant’s position will move to the correct position and will be saved, so centering should not be necessary the next time the application is launched.

You can also perform the centering yourself using the right controller of the VR goggles.

To do this, sit on the platform, wear VR goggles, point your head towards the front of the simulator and press the joystick on the right goggle controller.

Precise position calibration via keyboard

This procedure is useful when very accurate position calibration is needed. It does not replace basic calibration, but only allows for more accurate avatar setting.

  • Press and hold the Home key for at least 3 seconds
  • The application will perform centering and enter the “Recenter Mode” calibration mode
  • Now, using the arrow keys, we can move the position every 5 cm: ⇦ ⇨ – left/right, ⇧ ⇩ – front/back, PageUp PageDown – up/down
  • A short press on Home again confirms and saves the set position

Precise position calibration using a controller

This is the same procedure as above, only performed by one person and with the help of the right goggle controller:

  • Press and hold the joystick on the right controller for at least 3 seconds
  • The application will perform centering and enter the “Recenter Mode” calibration mode
  • Now we can move the position forward/backward and up/down by moving the joystick
  • A short press of the joystick on the controller again confirms and saves the set position
